I am asking myself why they didn't use sodium perchlorate, I mean it contains one oxygen molecule more, so it should result in a higher oxygen output. Or would sodium perchlorate consume more heat and therefore be less viable?

I want to know how much methane builds up, and if they have to address that as well.

    7. Joel Miller

My favourite part of this series is watching Destin interact with the crew, It's Awesome!! Destin just asks to see it and it seems they're not expecting him to ask but then just show him and explain everything about anything they're pretty clever cool guys.

    8. marn200

      that dude on 4:56

    9. Aaron Koch

The oxygen was low because Destin talking too much.

    10. eric vulgate

'clinker' is waste from an industrial process.

    11. mike anderson

They don't make air. The government found it much cheaper to train everyone to hold their breathe while submerged.

    12. dash8brj

I bet those oxygen candles contain the same thing as the emergency oxygen generators on aircraft, just on a much larger scale (the aircraft ones run for about 9-12 minutes, enough time for the pilot to get down to an altitude where the oxygen concentration is high enough that supllemental oxygen is no longer needed). It still defies logic when you hear the officer say "were going to make oxygen by burning this candle". In this case chemistry > logic ;)

    13. roundedges2

Do they use this on the USS Enterprise space ship? Or do they use dilithium crystals?

    14. A M-E

Where do they get Nitrogen (or some other inert gas) so as to not die of oxygen toxicity?

    15. 『Nafiscooldoo』

first thought - CO2 regen and/or electrolysis. studying submarine hydroacoustic systems in a navy military center at my high school btw. Fire extinguishing systems are an interesting piece of engineering, and so are hydroacoustic systems too! Destin, you are a true inspiration for millions of people, your videos are GREAT!!!! Please make more videos about submarines! Greetings from Saint Petersburg, Russia:)

As a 38 year veteran in the HVAC/R industry, I burst out laughing when I saw that leak detector. i was expecting some special, super secret Navy detection device... Instead, I see same basic detector used by any refrigeration mechanic in civilian life for the last 40 years... actually, that is a newer version of detector, but same basic design as the first H10 detectors

Hey Destin I have a physics question for you, its kind of hard to explain while typing but it concerns controlling gravity. I think I have a 33% chance of this theory being correct, if you are interested I can give you my email later. Thanks, Josh.

    43. Даниел Кулевски

So what happens to people if the oxygen gets too high?

    44. Yann Roger

I would have said that they would use some stuff to fix the C From CO² and release the O² in the process. And add few more O² to compensate the O that goes more likely somewhere else than the CO² It was very interesting.

    45. Gedeon R Baez

So water rich with Hydrogen or carbon could mean a sub is close?

When you were explaining "the Candle" on the Sub, I was reminded of the scene from The Martian where Matt Damon had to burn something to grow potatoes. Was Is, that the same process?

Matthew 25:31-46 New International Version (NIV) The Sheep and the Goats 31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ 41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ 44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ 45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ 46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.” -------------- ---------------------- ========================== ----

you should not show me your military secrets. i might built a submarine on my own now 🤗

    59. Lucas

I just Desing a scrubber last semester for university, I would have never imagine the is one on a nuclear underwater boat on freezing waters. This series is so cool

The residue is conveniently sized to fit in the TDU ... Trash Disposal Unit ... for overboard disposal unless they are kept on board until a port call disposal.

    69. FlyinRaptorJesus

I want some of those candles

    70. Salad Dressing

The education system should take notes.

    71. jumpkeys

I remember a fellow soldier lighting a sterno can under a poncho in 85 and he fell asleep. He died that night.

      1. Proton Neutron

@jumpkeys No he didn't. What ARE you blathering on about? If he hadn't been a Darwin award candidate I wouldn't be dead. Rent an IQ

      2. jumpkeys

@Proton Neutron you’re welcome. A man gave his life so you didn’t have to. Check your ego.

      3. Proton Neutron

@jumpkeys Smart? Just common sense. This is stuff everyone learned as a child when I was growing up.

      4. jumpkeys

@Proton Neutron not everyone is as smart as you. He was just trying to stay alive.

      A fellow ohioan lol

    73. Ahmar Azam

      Reason I quit science.These guys r awsome.

    74. Michael Galle

Oxygen is extracted from sea water while taking sea water on board for potable uses and for reactor cooling purposes. CO2 is extracted from the boat's atmosphere by CO2 Scrubbers and released overboard. CAMS is a constant test of boat atmosphere for CO2 and other gases which helps to prove and diagnose the atmosphere throughout the boat. GO NAVY

    75. William Washburn

Never mind oxygen what systems do they use to scrub and control co2 concentration

    76. Pe Ka

This is a working submarine, thus I suppose - its military? And modern enough to still be used? How are people allowed to film in there and upload these video for the general public?

      1. Proton Neutron

By permission from the USN of course! Duh

    77. Christopher Lee

      This is sheer genius

    78. Kamran Khan

if they exhaust CO2 to the water on surface it makes bubbles and enemies can detect it.

      1. Proton Neutron

        LMAO! God, rent an IQ

    79. KelseyDunnigan drang

I love the Cody'slab style name card!

    80. Fuk Yoo

“Yea this eog, it uses water and KOH” and now they didn't like me saying that so it's “shut down” and we must “burn candles”. Pons an fleshman, 1980, university of Utah, star in a jar. Cold fusion is easier with distilled water supplemented with KOH

    81. 2ronx

      How about the spaceship

      1. Proton Neutron

        what space ship?

A special thanks to the submariners, and supportive crews; for their service to our country.

    85. Omaha Dashcam Fails

I was left with one question by the end. We don't breathe 100% O2, so what about the other elements we breathe?

      1. Proton Neutron

only other gas is nitrogen. The body doesn't burn it

    86. Beardo Swaggins

You are a creator of oxygen! Lol Love this guy

    87. Gerald H

The miniature nuclear submarine NR-1, in service from 1969-2008, burned chlorate candles for its oxygen supply. The only reason I know this is because one of my instructors at Navy Nuc Power School in 1979 was a chief who was the engineer on this unique little sub. Quite a career the thing had over those nearly 40 years in service.

    88. satyrme

Thank you Dow, Watson, Palmer for your services. God Speed.

    89. Tyler Phillips

Good thing I didn't design a submarine. My lack of knowledge would have killed everyone in a million different ways.

    90. Joey Ma

Where do you p**p and what happens to the waste material???

      1. Proton Neutron

        toilet then flushed out

    91. Ethan Wild

*how do they produce nitrogen to ballence the oxygen ?*

      1. Proton Neutron

        they don't. N in N out.

      2. Smilley MLK

Nitrogen generally isn't absorbed during breathing - you exhale the same amount you inhale. That means you don't have to add any significant amount.

    92. MM2SS B

Did they not show you the CO burner or the charcoal bed? This series brings back so many memories, thanks for this.

    93. Ethan Wild

*"you did this in sixth grade" * crys in underfunded school **

      1. Proton Neutron

It doesn't take money. We built out own batteries out of household materials then ran current through water with two collection tubes. Your school system was just run by id10ts.

    94. InspectorMan

      DOW was awesome

    95. Brandon Johnson

The guy in the background at 4:56. The goof of the ship.

    96. 911s73targa

that leak detector looks pretty much like an aliexpress special

    97. Redmenace96

Feel certain that Russians and Chinese engineers are watching this and taking notes. I mean, Tom Clancy novels can only take you so far....

    98. Salsay012

What happen to the hydrogen gas during electrolysis?

      1. Smilley MLK

It's dumped into the ocean. It's not a significant amount, and it freely reacts with oxygen to form more water.

    99. Yaggnarab Donat

      Shouldn't this be confidential?

      1. Proton Neutron

why should 6th grace science be confidential???????

    100. Phillip Smith

Clinkers occur when the impurities in coal like sand and sulfur solidify under heat. This happens when coal is burned that might be the reference to clinkers.
